Why do we need to know the different types of poetry?

answers1: The main reason one studies poetry is so you can come to
understand it better. (This is the main reason one studies most
things).

An important way to understand poetry is to be able to discuss it with
other people (especially other people who already understand it).

When people who understand poetry discuss it, we use quite a few
technical terms. Terms about figures of speech (litotes, metaphor,
register shift), terms about genre (lyric, epic, detective fiction),
terms about form (sonnet, ballade, alexandrine). We use these
technical terms as a form of shorthand: a doctor talks about embolisms
and necrosis because those are conditions that commonly occur in
medicine, and will be understood by other doctors. Literary
specialists talk about framebreaking and ergodic methods because such
jargon defines things clearly, and saves time.

Some teachers know that this is the purpose of jargon in literature
appreciation - as a tool for clarity and terseness: they teach only
what is needed for a particular poem.

Sadly, some teachers have also discovered that teaching jargon is easy
(teaching poetry is always difficult), and they teach technical terms
without explaining why they are needed.

If a teacher asks you to list (say) all the synecdoches in a poem -
but never tells you why this matters - she is simply incompetent.

If you can't understand an explanation - you haven't learned anything.
But the teacher still gets paid.
