answers3:I'm also a technical writer by profession. I'm majoring in
Writing and Literature (English major), which gives me various writing
skills. I can work by day as a technical writer with an insurance
company, and if I wanted to write a novel I could do so in my own
time, without going broke.It really depends on the book; Some make
millions of dollars, others actually end up paying out money. I have
quite a few professors who are published, and not one of them has made

Basically that's an advance on royalties. They don't have to pay it

share it without proofreading it, editing it, revising it, refining it

want to build confidence in yourself and your writing ability, then
craft pieces that you yourself can be proud of. Part of that means
taking the time and effort to perfect and streamline everything you
produce before soliciting opinions on it. Be your own worst critic,
then you'll see real development. Like most of the askers here, you'll
most likely opt to select an answer from someone who goes in for
paying you lip service and telling you that your piece is grand as the
best one. If you do, ask yourself what the point was in posting this

perhaps 3 to 5 thousand, upon signing the contract. Then they'll keep
all the sales until they get paid back and start turning a profit. If
and when profit actually starts happening, you'll get about 40-50% of
that. Most writers never see more than the sign-on bonus for their
first book. Although 3 grand might sound like a lot, if you break down
the total time you spent writing, polishing, and working out the
contract, it usually doesn't even make minimum wage. So plan to take a
loss on your first book. Then write a new book that's even better, go
to an even bigger company with proof that you've been published
before, and hope for a better contract. The bigger publishers will
have more ability to get your book in more places and make more

of things - genre (some pay more, some pay less), popularity of the
topic, previous sales record of the author, market demand, etc.Some
genres pay as little as $2500 (a few pay only half of that), and a few
genres pay as much as $25,000 (if the market conditions are "ripe").
Advances are based on the minimal expected sales. If you sell more
than that, the advance "earns out" and you start getting royalties
(which can be 75 cents to 3 dollars per copy sold, depending on your
contract and book format). The "average" advance for a new author in
the genre I write for is about $8,000.If it takes you a year to write,
edit, and polish your manuscript, four months to find an agent, two
months to sell the work to an editor, and (on average) a year to get
published and into stores, then you have worked 30 months for your
advance. Working at McDonalds could actually pay better (they pay
above minimum wage here, plus overtime).25,000 advance if you're lucky
/ 30 months = 833 per monthI saw an industry average given as $46,000,
but that includes all genres (where payout is not equal), the few
