How do I become a professional video game/video game hardware designer?

Reginald Maxi: First of all, you don't study video game design. That is a good way to *not* get a job in the game industry. Start off by learning Computer Science, Software Engineering, and Graphics design. Learn calculus and linear algebra while you're at it. And take a lot of physics. If you want to design the hardware, get a degree in Computer Engineering.

Aubrey Tirri: You will need a basic understand of programming, as well as 3 dimensional graphical interfaces and models. I would suggest downloading Blender and googling tutorials. It is the best open source (meaning free) software in it's category and should give you a taste of whether or not you want to continue on that path. It runs off of Python (a server-side programming language), but does not require an understanding of it. You can learn as you go quite comfortably....Show more

Torrie Weissenbach: There are a few colleges and schools with video game development programs. Guildhall at UT Austin was ! one, as I recall, although it may have closed or have been located elsewhere. You need to know a lot of things to be accepted into these post-graduate programs though. You might want to look into pen and paper or board game design before trying to bring your vision to life on a computer....Show more
