Tijuana Tatsak: most board games are printed on cardboard thats a good place to start
Byron Fortmann: Make it, primarily, on a good idea. You see some pretty conceptually shitty board games. Do this and you won't find yourself under the umbrella of people I deem to be shitty makers of board games.
Janita Tetlow: What you should make it on really depends on the game. You could use the back of an old board game board. You could use cardboard, wood, Legos, paper, an old book cover, a cutting board, poster board and salt dough, etc. If you want the game to last more than a few days, go with something sturdier than cardboard or paper. If you really want it to last, you can laminate all of your cards and such.
